![]() ![]() The "BBO" used pipe organ components and beer bottles with liquid, precisely tuned with a Peterson strobe tuner, to produce a clear, flute-like musical sound when played with a keyboard or via recorded MIDI files. In 1998, the Peterson Company celebrated its 50-year anniversary by creating the "Beer Bottle Organ" prototype in the exhibit area of the American Institute of Organ Builders convention. Peterson became Company President, after previously serving as Design Engineer, Production Manager, and Vice President. Peterson bought their Strobotuner division, and continue to service the Strobotuner product line, which is now made in China. They built two additional buildings totaling 15,000 square feet (1,400 m 2) on the company site between 19. In 1964, the Peterson company built a new 3,000-square-foot (280 m 2) headquarters in Alsip, Illinois, on a plot of 2.5 acres (10,000 m 2). The company went on to produce other products for musical tuning, electronic organs, home security, and keyboards, and later developed and produced electronic and electro-mechanical equipment used in pipe organs. In 1957, Peterson completed the world's first transistor organ for Gulbransen. He soon licensed his inventions to the Gulbransen Piano Company of Chicago to use in home electronic organs. Peterson founded Peterson Electro-Musical Products in 1948. He also focused on the realistic attack and decay of individual electronic notes. He founded Haygren Organ Company to build electronic pipe organs with a sound he felt better matched real pipe organs, and was the first to use multiple oscillators in the organ design to produce a genuine ensemble. ![]() Army near the end of World War II, and while stationed in New York City, developed a further fascination with the sound and mechanics of pipe organs. The versatile tone control affects low and high frequencies, simultaneously boosting and cutting each end of the frequency spectrum as the knob is turned. Its innovative two-stage gain circuit is a critical part of the fullness and definition that so many guitarists love about the DS-1. Standard mode on the DS-1W delivers the authentic sound of the original in every way. Filled with artful Waza Craft refinements, the DS-1W expands the DS-1 experience for a broader range of styles and applications. The iconic orange stomp is behind the signature sounds of a long list of rock, alternative, and fusion legends, and its aggressive tone can be heard on countless famous tracks. Its hard-edged attack and smooth sustain have made it the best-selling compact effect, with over 1.5 million units sold to date. Introduced in 1978 among the earliest models in the Boss compact series, the DS-1 redefined the sound of distortion and remains as influential today as ever. VINTAGE STROBE TUNER MANUALWhether you’ve been playing for three months or thirty years, the Elements was designed for those that care about tone and don’t care to read an entire manual to get the show on the road. Like the rest of our pedals, each Elements device is hand-built right here in our shop using the same high-quality through-hole parts as everything else. Each Elements pedal is designed to work with a variety of amps of all costs and wattages, ensuring compatibility with whatever you’re rocking. However, don’t be fooled by the simplicity each circuit was designed and internally set to the sweet spot so you only have to worry about the volume level, just bring your amp and guitar. ![]() VINTAGE STROBE TUNER SERIESWhile we can’t streamline the amp setup process for you or take the guesswork out of your existing pedals, we can give you the next best thing: a series of stompboxes that have just one knob for a streamlined setup process, giving you that feeling of satisfaction each and every time you plug in. Whether you have a rig with two amps, 30 pedals or just one, there is something to be said about turning on and rocking without having to twiddle hundreds of knobs every time. Regardless of skill level or technical chops, or sheer amount of gear, this is a feeling whose greatness is 100 percent agreed upon. Few things in life can compare to plugging in a guitar and playing your go-to riff on a gear setup that just works. ![]()

![]() ![]() Each species is identified by its scientific nomenclature which means we hear a great deal of latin in the wet lab. All of the information is assembled and accompanies the samples to the lab for processing. Finally, we weighed and sorted the catch. The CTD was performed to capture water samples and hydrological data. They are then shipped out for processing. Forty-eight (48) hours later they are transferred to alcohol. In the cod ends, plankton and other sea life are collected from either the bottom or a maximum depth of 200 feet. The “catch” from both the Neustons and the Bongos are placed into jars with formaldehyde as a preservative. These are round shaped “sock” nets with cod ends. Now I know that a Neuston is a rectangular frame to which has been attached a “sock” style net with a round portion at the bottom known as the “cod end.” The Neuston drags at the surface and catches sargassum (sea weed) and also plankton. ![]() What type of relationship does sound velocity have to depth? What would you expect to happen to the sound velocity as you raise the CTD out of the water (decrease depth)? In the O-Lab, Stephanie and Megan begin to process the data that we collected. We found that as we lowered the CTD further into the water (increased the depth) the sound velocity decreased. It was great to be part of a team, working together to complete a task, just the way science students work in the laboratory to complete lab activities.Īfter acquiring the data from the CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth) device, we were able to produce a graph comparing the sound velocity (the speed at which sound travels) and the depth of the water. I truly felt like I was accomplishing something of value, something that Alaskan fisherman and the cruise line industry will be able to use for years to come. It was very interesting and fun to be part of the scientific research that went on today by surveying the Gorman Strait. Megan and I bring the CTD safely back to the ship. ![]() By the end of the day we had nearly finished surveying the Gorman Strait and completed several CTD deployments leaving us with a lot of data that needed to be processed later that evening. It is also operated manually therefore several people need to be on hand to assist in its deployment into the water. The CTD on the other hand cannot be trusted to give accurate data while the ship is in motion. Each instrument does the same thing in sampling the conditions on the ocean floor, but the benefit of the MVP is that the ship is not required to stop to collect data when using it, hence the name moving vessel profiler. DECKSET DOLPHIN FOR GARDEN TUB BRASS MANUALUnfortunately this piece of equipment would not cooperate with us either and we were forced to use the manual version of the MVP called a CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth) device. A machine called an MVP (moving vessel profiler) is used to do that. I am glad I was not in charge! Every few passes through the Gorman Strait we were also required to take a sample of the conditions of the ocean floor. I assist in sending the CTD line to the bottom of the ocean It is a complex process with many computer screens and complicated programs. As the ship moved through the Gorman Strait collecting data using a transducer that send multiple beams to the ocean floor the technicians were able to show me how they read and interpret that data. It was a team effort to get the system up and working again, but they were eventually successful. The system that logs data as the ship moves through the water was unable to track the ships movements. The morning began with computer system problems – something that took teamwork and troubleshooting to fix. Today was an intense day of hydrography survey work! I received an introductory course to all the survey research that is done on the ship. The edges come quite sharp but the head weight always seemed to be a bit light for the handle length to me. The thing that I found though was that the GB's seem to be strongly designed towards light work, light/medium splitting and softwoods. Don't get me wrong, they are amazingly made pieces of axe art! And anyone that likes axes should have at least 1 GB pass through their hands. Particularly Gransfors Bruks axes of which I have had all sizes, but at this risk of offending all the GB fans, none of them really seemed to hit it for me. One interpretation is that Washington Mill Company had come up with the design, and had then tapped Davis to fabricate them for shipment back to Seabeck.I am looking for a new axe and have been researching this for a while now. ![]() There’s evidence that Washington Mill apparently placed an order for Puget Sound axes with the Davis Axe Company in Massachusetts in 1868. As for theories about the origins, one online reference points to Washington Mill Company in Seabeck on Hood Canal. Also, “Puget Sound” isn’t a brand name, it’s a design or pattern that was manufactured, royalty-free, by multiple companies. There’s no patent for the Puget Sound Falling Axe, and as far as anyone can tell, there’s no single logger or blacksmith who was ever credited with the design. “Probably because he was tired of breaking his handle, when he bashed it against the trunk of the tree as he’s cutting his springboard notch.” “It’s likely that somebody asked the camp blacksmith to make him a long-bit ax for cutting his springboard notch,” Allyn said. Thus, a more heavy duty version of a carpenter’s mortising axe would be the ideal tool for cutting springboard notches. With a long, narrow bit (or blade), the shape and length mimic a carpenter’s mortising axe, Allyn says, which is a tool some loggers would have been familiar with 150 years ago. ![]() Those springboard notches, Allyn believes, are key to why the Puget Sound Falling Axe is shaped the way it is. Even in 2021, evidence of old springboard notches are visible on stumps along trails and on the edges of campgrounds all over the Northwest. This meant cutting holes or notches into the trunks of trees at shoulder level or higher to place springboards, those planks that functioned as scaffolding-like temporary structures for loggers to stand on and use a crosscut saw to cut down a tree. And, because the big cedar trees in the Northwest often grew from stumps and “nursery trees,” this meant that, in order to cut a big tree down by hand, loggers needed to get many feet above a very complex and sometimes rotted stump. That’s why a longer handle was useful – it gave a logger more reach across a wide tree trunk. The timber here in the Northwest – Washington, Oregon, British Columbia – in the 19th century was significantly bigger than in most other parts of the country, Allyn says. Allyn says the inspiration, not surprisingly, was likely the trees of Puget Sound themselves. But the basic design had to come from somewhere. “Everyone’s working with these big old iron tools, and you need to maintain them.”Īnd, before a factory could turn them out back east, it was a blacksmith who was likely first to create what became the Puget Sound Falling Axe. ![]() “These logging camps all had a blacksmith in camp, because you needed one just to maintain all your logging tools and your digging tools,” Allyn told KIRO Radio. KIRO Radio asked Tom Allyn, a Maple Valley man who collects axes and who knows a lot about their history and how they work. Just how – and why – would an axe like this be developed in lumber camps around Puget Sound 150 years ago? There are old catalogs that show “Puget Sound Falling Axes” alongside other regional tools named for places where men once chopped or sawed down trees by hand, such as Jersey, Michigan and even Long Island. More than a hundred years ago – and maybe as recently as the 1950s, when chainsaws displaced axes and handsaws – several manufacturers, mostly in the eastern United States, were making and selling them to loggers in the Northwest as well as other parts of North America. It’s a specially designed axe that is believed to have been developed somewhat organically, right here in Western Washington, in the pre-mechanized days of logging, perhaps as far back as the 1860s. The piece of essential logging equipment in question is called a “Puget Sound Falling Axe” – falling as in falling, or felling, or cutting down trees. Doesn’t everyone want to know the stories behind the names of nationally-known products that are inspired for Northwest places?įortunately, experts on today’s topic were much more forthcoming than Toyota and Costco. ![]() ![]() ![]() Links to further details about the materials that are due are included.
